Its one of four types of  dissociative disorders, diagnosable conditions in which theres a fragmented sense of identity, memories, and/or consciousness. The hallmark of these conditions is an involuntary disconnection from reality. According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), about half of adults have had a disassociative episode in their lives, but only around 2 percent of people meet the criteria for being diagnosed with the disorder. Women are more likely than men to experience depersonalization/ derealization or some other type of disassociative occurrence. A diagnosis of depersonalization/derealization disorder can be upsetting and confusing initially, but once you understand that the symptoms youre experiencing (some of which may have you wondering if youre losing your mind) have a recognizable and reasonable cause and, more important, that psychotherapy and perhaps medication can help, you may begin to feel less worried and anxious. Dissociative Disorders According to the Diagnostic and Statistic Manual of Mental Health Disorders, 5th Edition (DSM-5), which was published in 2013, the other dissociative conditions are dissociative amnesia, dissociative fugue,  and dissociative identity disorder. Unlike psychotic disorders, people with depersonalization/derealization disorder know that their experiences of detachment arent real. Therefore, they may fear that theyre going crazy. Dissociative disorders can lead to depression and anxiety and are believed to be linked to a history of trauma. Symptoms Although depersonalization/derealization disorder is considered to be a single diagnosis, it has two distinct aspects that may or may not apply to one person. Depersonalization means feeling detached from yourself as if youre watching your life take place from the sidelines or youre viewing yourself on a movie screen. You may not feel connected to your body, mind, feelings, or sensations. Some people describe feeling robotic or unable to control speech or movement. You may not be able to attach emotions to memories, or even own your memories as experiences that happened to you. Some people who are dealing with depersonalization experience  alexithymiaâ€"an inability to recognize or describe emotions. There also are potential physical symptomsâ€"the sense that your body and limbs are distortedâ€"swollen or shrunkenâ€"or that your head is wrapped in cotton. You may feel physically numb to sensations. Derealization is a sense of feeling detached from your environment and the objects and other people in it. The world may seem distorted and unreal as if youre observing it through a veil. You may feel as if a glass wall is separating you from people you care about. This aspect of disassociation also can create distortions in vision and other senses. Your surroundings may seem blurry, colorless, two-dimensional, unreal, or larger-than-life or cartoonish. Distance and the size or shape of objects may be distorted, and you also may have a heightened awareness or your surroundings. Very recent events may seem to have happened in the distant past. Causes and Risk Factors Severe stress, anxiety, and depression are common triggers for depersonalization/derealization disorder. Often, people with depersonalization/derealization disorder experienced past trauma in their lives. They might have suffered emotional or physical abuse or neglect in their childhood,  witnessed domestic violence, or had a loved one die unexpectedly.  A lack of sleep or an overstimulating environment can make symptoms worse. Yet, according to Merck Manual, 25 percent to 50 percent of the time the stress that brings on depersonalization/derealization disorder is relatively minor, or not even obvious. Some people are more vulnerable to psychiatric disorders than others. In the case of depersonalization/derealization disorder, the ?Mayo Clinic lists these specific risk factors:   An innate tendency to avoid or deny difficult situations; problems adapting to difficult situationsExperiencing or even witnessing a traumatic event or abuse as a child or as an adult  Severe stress in any area of life, from important relationships to finances to workDepression or anxiety,  especially severe or prolonged depression, or anxiety with panic attacksA history of using recreational drugs, which can trigger episodes of depersonalization or derealization Episodes of depersonalization/derealization disorder can last for hours, days, weeks, or even months. For some, such episodes become chronic, evolving into ongoing feelings of depersonalization or derealization that may periodically get better or worse. How Is Stress Affecting My Health? Diagnosis   In order to zero in on psychiatric diagnosis, a doctor will first make sure there arent other reasons for symptoms, such as drug abuse, a seizure disorder, or other mental health problems. Once other potential problems are ruled out, a clinician will consider criteria from the DSM-5. There are many types of therapy and techniques for treating psychiatric disorders. One thats often used is cognitive-behavioral therapy, which combines strategies for blocking obsessive thinking about feeling things arent real and distraction techniques.   How Cognitive Behavior Therapy Works Grounding techniques call on the senses to help a person feel more in touch with realityâ€"playing loud music to engage hearing, for instance, or holding an ice cube in order to help a person feel connected to the sensation. Other approaches that are sometimes useful for treating depersonalization/derealization disorder are psychodynamic techniques that focus on working through conflicts and negative feelings that people tend to detach from, and moment-to-moment tracking (focusing on whats happening in the moment) along with labeling of dissociation and effect, which teaches people to recognize and identify their feelings of dissociation, according to Merck Manual. There are no medications approved specifically for depersonalization/derealization disorder. Doctors sometimes prescribe anti-anxiety drugs and antidepressants to help assuage symptoms of the condition although none of these will directly treat it.   With targeted, personalized treatment, some people completely recover from depersonalization/derealization disorder. The chances of this are best when the underlying stressors that contributed to and triggered the condition can be successfully dealt with. Merriam-Websters 2018 Words of the Year Merriam-Webster’s 2018 Words of the Year Merriam-Webster’s 2018 Words of the Year By Mark Nichol Toward the end of every calendar year, Merriam-Webster, like other major dictionaries, shares a list of the words most frequently searched for on its website. As usual, this search traffic is largely driven by public discourse, as people look up words they see and hear in the media and in conversations, seeking to learn definitions of unfamiliar words or to clarify for themselves the meanings of words they know (or think they know). This post discusses Merriam-Webster’s Word of the Year for 2018 and ten runners-up. The Word of the Year, justice, was newsworthy in several contexts. The primary sense is that of administration or maintenance of fairness and lawfulness, and increasing concern about social justice has brought the concept, and the term that represents it, to the forefront in our society. But justice is a job title as well as a concept, referring to a judge on a national or state supreme court or similar body, and the controversy over confirmation of Brett Kavanaugh as an associate justice of the US Supreme Court also led people to check the definition. (The senior member of a supreme court is often titled â€Å"chief justice,† while the others are designated â€Å"associate justices.†) Finally, on a more trivial note, the Justice League is a team of superheroes created for DC Comics and appearing in various media, including a film released late last year. The runners-up include nationalism, which has figured prominently in the media as the concept gains traction throughout the world, including in the United States, where President Donald Trump recently unabashedly identified himself as a nationalist. However, he, like many people, appears to be unclear on the concept: Nationalism is often conflated with patriotism. However, while the latter term refers to pride in one’s country, nationalism denotes loyalty to a nation at the expense of international (and intranational) harmony. Nationalism is closely associated with fascism, a political philosophy that incorporates dictatorial control and centralization of authority and brutal suppression of individuals and groups deemed undesirable or resistant to fascists’ goals. In summary, to be called a nationalist is decidedly not a compliment, and to call oneself a nationalist does not invite compliments. Pansexual, incorporating a Greek prefix meaning â€Å"all,† refers to a conception of gender identity and sexual orientation as something that occurs along a spectrum, rejecting the idea of binary categorization. Lodestar, originally denoting Polaris, the North Pole Star, which for millennia has served as a navigational aid, now refers more broadly to a guide, inspiration, or model. (Lode is a Middle English word meaning â€Å"course† or â€Å"way; it’s seen also in the context of mining: A lode is a deposit of ore.) The term had a vogue this year after it was used in an anonymous op-ed in the New York Times purportedly written by a senior Trump administration official. Because Vice President Mike Pence is known to use the fairly obscure term, some people suspected him of being the author. An epiphany is an appearance or manifestation, but the term is most commonly employed to refer to a realization or revelation. Its popularity as a search term early this year likely resulted from the Christian holiday by that name, which on January 6 commemorates the visit of the Magi, or Three Wise Men, to where the infant Jesus lay; it derives from the Greek verb epiphainein, meaning â€Å"manifest.† Feckless, used by a television commentator to criticize Ivanka Trump for, in her role as adviser to her father, failing to criticize the Trump administration’s immigration policies, employs the root feck, of Scottish origin, meaning â€Å"value† or â€Å"worth.† Essentially, it is a rare synonym for worthless. Laurel, the word for a tree whose foliage was used to crown victors in athletic events in ancient Greece, became a hot search term when a debate erupted online about which of two words was being enunciated in an online dictionary’s pronunciation sound file. By extension of its original definition, the term came to apply to the celebratory object itself and to figurative honors; one idiom based on the term is â€Å"rest on (one’s) laurels,† which alludes to someone who, upon achieving an honor, refrains from attempting feats that bring further recognition. (Usage generally pertains to one who does not rest on one’s laurels, meaning that person does seek other honors.) Pissant was frequently looked up after a radio personality described a famous football player’s daughter with the word, which is a derogatory dialectal term formed from piss and ant. (This word is not to be confused with puissant, a rare term meaning â€Å"powerful† and etymologically related to power and potent. All three words derive from the Latin term posse, meaning â€Å"able,† which survives in English as the term for a group deputized to pursue a fugitive or, more loosely, to denote one’s entourage.) The death this year of Aretha Franklin, best known for her rousing rendition of the song â€Å"Respect,† prompted look-ups of that word, which literally means â€Å"look back.† (The second syllable of that word, meaning â€Å"look,† is also the root of spectacle, spectator, inspect, suspect, and so on.) Maverick is a term often applied to the late John McCain, a US senator and presidential aspirant, for his frequent opposition to party-line politics. The word, describing someone who often acts without regard for group or party loyalty, derives from the surname of a gentleman who, after taking a small herd of cattle as payment for a debt, neglected to brand them, rendering them vulnerable to appropriation by other ranchers, who rounded them up on the open range and applied their own brands to the livestock. Since then, the word has been a synonym for independent, though â€Å"stolen from a careless owner† would be a more appropriate association. The death of Marvel Comics mogul Stan Lee this year resulted in references to excelsior, the word with which Lee typically signed off in the columns he wrote for his company’s comic books. Though the primary meaning of the word is mundane- it was a trademark for a brand of wood shavings used as protective packing material and later a generic term- its origin is the Latin word meaning â€Å"higher†; excel, excellent, and so on are related. Language and identity are two expressions that need to be explained. English is the official language in several countries; Chinese is the language spoken by Chinese people and Danish is how Danes speak. But languages could also be described as different ways of talking due to social background, education, profession, age and sex. A person’s language is connected to his social situation. Eliza, the cockney flower girl from the gutter does not speak the same language as professor Higgins, even if English is their common mother tongue. They speak differently because they belong to different social worlds. Identity can signify the very special characteristic of a person, something that makes him differ from others. EDUCATION AND IDENTITY CHANGES Eliza and Rita, the principal characters of the two plays are both objects of identity change in the course of the stories. Are these changes identical or can we find differences? The two young women originally come from intellectually poor circles. Eliza is a young flower girl who speaks a gutter language. She talks in the following way: "Aint no call to meddle with me, he aint." (1) Her manners are crude, and her cockney accent leaves her feeling as if she is a second-class citizen. She is treated that way. Still, she seems to be proud of herself, "I’m a good girl, I am." (2) Rita is a twenty-six-year-old, brash, earthy hairdresser, married to a Liverpudlian beerdrinker who demands her to have children and to be a good wife. She feels unsatisfied with her marriage. At the hairdressing salon where she works, she gets tired of the daily listening to women who talk a lot without saying any important. "They never tell y’things that matter." (3) The story of the two plays tells how the education of the women changes their lives. There are remarkable progresses in their studies and the result is an obvious change of their lives. INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL CHANGES I would guess that many readers and spectators of the two plays regard them as about the same story. As a matter of fact, they are not. There is at least one important difference. The changes are not the same. One of them is external while the other is internal.

Conclusion In writing an essay, assume the reader does not know anything about your essay so you have to write in detail not-withstanding the knowledge of your marker or reader.
