Depression Is A Essays - Depression, Psychiatric Diagnosis
Depression is a psychiatric disorder characterized by feelings of worthlessness, guilt, sadness, helplessness, and hopelessness. It is different then normal sadness or grief from the loss of a loved one because it is persistent and severe. Clinical depression has many related symptoms trouble sleeping, eating disorders, withdrawal and inactivity, self-punishment, and loss of pleasure. People that are depressed do not like to do things they may usually like to. Surveys that have been taken that show approximately 20 in 100 people suffer from depression at any one time. About one if four Americans will suffer from a depression over the course of their lifetime. Depression strikes men and women of all ages, in all races, but most studies indicate that women are more often afflicted. There are two major forms of depression that people get. One form is called depressive disorder. It is diagnosed only by episodes of depression. Episodes can be short or long but are usually brought about by an incident in a persons life. An example of this is if someone close to them dies. The other kind is called bipolar or manic depressive illness, it is recognized by alternating depressed and manic episodes. This is an actual brain dysfunction. In the major depression or the depressed phase of bipolar illness, a depressed mood predominates, even though the patient may not be aware of feeling sad. Typically, he or she loses all interest in activities. Symptoms include sleep disturbances, not able to concentrate or to make decisions, loss of appetite or greatly increased appetite, slowed thinking and decreased energy feelings of worthlessness, guilt, hopelessness, diminished sexual interest, and recurrent thoughts of suicide and death, sometimes leading a person to actually committing suicide. In the manic phase of bipolar disorder the patients behavior is bizarre and sometimes obnoxious. Symptoms of this are the person being hyper and have lots of energy, they talk a lot, racing thoughts, and a decreased need for sleep. In this stage it is very hard to recognize. Both depressive and bipolar disorders run in families. Meaning if your father or mother had it you have a high chance of getting it yourself. Most people who are depressed are women. They may be biologically induced depression. Meaning that there is a lack of or too much of a chemical or protein. Or it may be that women learn social roles that favor feelings of helplessness. Because women in trouble are more likely to seek professional assistance than men, statistics report that more people who are depressed are mostly women. The depressive disorders are among the most treatable in psychiatry. The usual treatment in modern practice involves administration of a drug plus supportive psychotherapy. Basically going to a psychiatrist and talking to them. The two major drugs that are used to treat depressive disorders are tricyclic/tetracyclic antidepressants and the monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitors. The last one requires the patient to follow a special diet because the drugs react to tryamine. Tryamine is found in cheeses, beer, wine, chicken livers, and other foods, and causes higher blood pressure. The tricyclic antidepressants require no special diet. Lithium carbonate is a common mineral that is used to control the manic phase of manic-depressive illness. In small doses it is also used to regulate the mood fluctuations of this bipolar disorder. I also found a little amount on something called electroconvulsive therapy, or ECT, is considered most effective for depressions that do not respond to drug therapy. ECT is not widely used and is very controversial. It brings rapid relief from severe depression and can often prevent suicide. But it did not tell me how it works.

The eNotes Blog Irish Poet Seamus HeaneyDies
Irish Poet Seamus HeaneyDies Nobel prize winner Seamus Heaney, The most important Irish poet since Yeats, passed away in Dublin early this morning. He was 74. In the short time since his death, tributes have poured in from all over the globe. But all eyes are on the people of Ireland, whose loss of a national treasure is deeply felt. President Michael D. Higgins, himself a published poet, has spoken of Heaney, the presence of Seamus was a warm one, full of humour, care and courtesy ââ¬â a courtesy that enabled him to carry with such wry Northern Irish dignity so many well-deserved honours. It is that Irish dignity that Higgins credits with boosting national confidence after the economic downturn the nation suffered in 2010. He carried with him an Irish legacy, born of rural county Derry, that will live on in poems like Digging and Field Work.à Taoiseach Enda Kenny spoke for all of his country when he said the death of Heaney was a great sorrow to Irelandà ââ¬Å"For us, Seamus Heaney was the keeper of language, our codes, our essence as a people. Listen to Heaneys 1995 Nobel lecture below: Under my window, a clean rasping sound When the spade sinks into gravelly ground: My father, digging. I look down Between my finger and my thumb The squat pen rests. Iââ¬â¢ll dig with it.

Heat Exchangers Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
Heat Exchangers - Research Paper Example à At the center of the heat exchanger lies two plates that are pinned together by pressing them and welding them together. There is a module whose function is to carry fluids in and out of the whole system. This combination is very efficient in offering high operating temperatures, and high pressure a factor that is vital in the heat exchange process. à The heat exchanger is able to function well without any gaskets. This means that it is able to work under these extreme conditions without any risk of leaking the fluid during the heat exchange process. Normally different types of heat exchangers are combined to come up with a more effective, cost friendly and efficient unit of the heat exchanger and the plate and shell heat exchanger is just but one example. This means that the fluids enter at the opposite ends of the unit enabling them to flow into the center of the exchanger. As the fluids come close to each other, there is an exchange of heat between the fluids. à As the flu id passes through the exchanger it either lose or absorb heat due to latent heat.à According to the nature of the heat exchange process, plates and shell heat exchangers are classified as indirect contact heat exchangers. The exchange of heat takes place by direct mixing of hot and cold fluids allowing transfer of heat and mass to take place simultaneously in a direct contact heat exchanger and such a unit is applicable only where the two fluids are either harmless when in contact or are desirable.

Yemen problems Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words
Yemen problems - Essay Example The modern process of desalination aims at developing cost effective ways of water provision to the people along the coast. It is viewed as a rainfall independent source of water. The vapor ââ¬â compression desalination process refers to the process used to distill water. This distillation process involves the evaporation of saline or sea water by the application of heat obtained from compressed vapor. The compression of vapor to be used in the desalination process links them together. Compression of vapor increases both temperature and pressure of the vapor. The latent heat generated at this stage can be used to generate more power and additional vapor. There are two methods that can apply the effect of compressed water. The first one, thermo compression, utilizes an ejector system, motivated by the steam found at the monomeric pressure obtained from an external source. This aims at recycling vapor from the desalination process. The second method involves compressing the water v apor with the use of a mechanical device. The mechanical vapor compression, MVC, in which the evaporation effect takes place at the manometer, is used to recycle water (Wang et al., 2008). The compression turbine facilitates the mechanical compression. The generated vapor gets directed back towards the heat exchanger condenser to turn the vapor into water. In the process, the resultant fresh water is transferred to a storage area while the heat removed in the condensation process gets transmitted back in the remaining feedback. The vapor compression units are applied in the desalination processes. Fig1. Desalination process As indicated in fig. 1 above, heat is introduced at the top of the loop by the cooling device. The heat vaporizes the liquid refrigerant found in the evaporation plate. The vapor is carried through to the compressor to sanction tube. Energy is supplied in order to warm vapor to obtain hot vapor with high pressure to be passed to the condenser. The boiling high-pr essure vapor discharges heat to the air stream on the other side of the condenser fins as it cools and condenses into warm liquid. The Warm liquid is then pumped from the bottommost of the condenser through an expansion device where temperature and pressure drop meaningfully, forming the refrigeration effect. The cycle completes as the cold fluid passes to the cold plate. Hui (2007) highlights that following advantages and disadvantages of Vapor Compression Merits à · trouble free, low maintenance compressor and cheap Low noise vibration Driven by live steam Ability to turn salty water into clean pure water à · Low mass flow rate à · high Vapor compression operations, à · Low cold plate temperature and the capability to transport heat away from the source. Demerits Require high steam pressure Relatively high quantity of hot processes water derived Dumping the unexploited salt solution back into the ocean makes the process difficult. The potential to destroy ocean life Energy req uirement for starting up power desalination plants is an enormous expense, and burning fossil fuels appear like choosing an environmental crisis. If regions located away from the coastline or in a high altitude make an effort to use desalinated water, it proves to be an even more costly process. High altitudes and distant distances require abundant resources to transport the water from the salt water body. It is an expensive venture Charitable organizations Several groups have come forward to help alleviate the water crisis in Yemen. The first group is the Islamic Relief, USA. It has been working towards a better future. The group has set up water supply systems in many parts including Sarohindi village. The project ensures that people get clean water for themselves and their animals.

Applying Cyber Policy to Law . Vulnerability Disclosure Analysis Essay
Applying Cyber Policy to Law . Vulnerability Disclosure Analysis - Essay Example They protect the organization or business against cyber crimes which jeopardizes the operation of the business. With regard to this, every business organization should analyze its Cyber Law risks as well as needs on a regular basis. Applying cyber policy to law significantly helps in preventing cyber attacks. These are deliberate actions that aim at altering, disrupting, deceiving, degrading or destroying computer systems as well as networks. Federal and State Cyber-security Law For over a decade, several experts in the United States and abroad are expressing increasing concerns with regard to cyber-security (Kerr, 2009). This is the light of the growing impact, sophistication and frequency of attacks on information systems, not only in the US but also different parts of the world. Current research indicates that the framework for cyber-security needs revision. The complex federal responsibility in cyber-security takes into consideration securing federal systems as well as helping in protection of nonfederal systems (Kerr, 2009). With regard to the current law, all federal agencies have roles in cyber-security relating to their own systems. The state government is attempting to revise its laws for the purpose of improving cyber-security. It is doing so through increasing public visibility of firms having weak security. California passed the Notice of Security Breach Act in 2003, which requires that any organization which maintains personal information of citizens of California and has a security breach have to disclose all the details of the event. Other states in the US also followed the same (Bosworth & Whyne, 2009). The security breach regulations usually punish organizations due to their failure. They do so while giving them freedom of choosing how to secure their systems. Ina addition, this regulation helps in creating an incentive for organizations to voluntarily invest heavily in cyber-security (Bosworth & Whyne, 2009). This is for the purpose of avoidin g the potential destruction of reputation as well as resulting economic loss that can arise from a cyber-attack. Both the state and federal laws aim at improving the security of information systems of organization. They both dictate that organization maintain a considerable level of security (Bosworth & Whyne, 2009). They also advocate on improvement of the laws for the purpose of maintaining acceptable standards of cyber-security. Nevertheless, both the state and state law on cyber-security requires a reasonable level of cyber-security which leaves a room for interpretation until the establishment of the case laws. Taking the United States into consideration it is a fact that it puts a lot of concern with respect to cyber-security (Bosworth & Whyne, 2009). This makes the country less susceptible to cyber-attacks as compared to other countries in different parts of the world. Existing laws with regard to cyber-security in many countries do not put a lot of emphasis to deal with cybe r-security. Due to this, criminals usually conduct a lot of crimes on the internet for the purpose of taking advantages of the less severe punishments in these countries. However, governments and industries are now realizing the severe threats of cyber-attacks on economic as well as political security, without forgetting the interest of the public (Bosworth & Whyne, 2009). Nevertheless cybercrimes are becoming difficult to fight back. This is therefore calling for

Maslows hierarchy of human needs
Maslows hierarchy of human needs Question 1 Abraham Maslow is revered as a great psychologist who lived from 1908 to 1970. He is renowned for the Maslows hierarchy of human needs. He came up with 5 levels of human needs. On the lowest quadrant of the pyramid lay the physiological needs which entailed food, sexual activity and breathing. Maslow considered these needs to be very basic and an essential for every human being. The next level of needs was the safety needs which encompass both financial and personal security as well as health and the well being of an individual. As the pyramid advances, there are other greater needs that human beings desire such as love and affection, esteem and self actualization. These needs are satisfied in order of their hierarchy such that one would not satisfy a high need without first satisfying a lower need within the Maslow hierarchy need. Maslow hierarchy of needs is indeed imperative in that it illuminates the most important and the least important needs of human beings. Through this theory, we are able to identify the most basic human needs. In addition, Maslows hierarchy of needs enables us to gain a succinct understanding of the theory of motivation. Most times, managers would first of all seek to meet the basic needs of their employees so that they can be able to motivate their employees to higher levels. Critics on the other hand suggest that human needs cannot be classified into hierarchies as Maslow did. A onetime philosopher argues that people are diverse and have different needs that they consider as basic. The hierarchy can therefore not be considered to be universal. What one considers to be a fundamental need may not be fundamental to another. Maslow was criticized for testing a small sample of about 100 students to come up with the hierarchy of human needs. The limited testing cannot therefore be construed to be sufficient. Question 2 In this experiment, patients with depression shall be sampled. A sample of 40 patients under new medication and suffering from depression will be taken. The effectiveness of the patients new medication against depression will be measured by determining the changes in behavior among the 40 patients. Hypothesis This study seeks to establish the effectiveness of new medication for treating depression Random assignment of participants The sample of 40 patients suffering from depression will be sampled from different hospitals across the state of Texas. These patients will consist of those suffering from depression and are using the new medication. The patients will be monitored for about a week to establish the effectiveness of the new medication. Independent variable The period of time for administering the new medication to patients with depression Dependent variable The rate of healing of the patients with depression The quantity of drugs administered to the patients suffering from depression Ethical guidelines Here, we shall monitor the patients improvement in terms of their behavior. The patients sampled will be monitored for a period of one week. Question 3 Psychology is the study of the mental mind and the disciplines and theories that surround the mental mind. Psychology therefore does not merely study the mental process but also encompasses the behavior of human beings and the likely effects that this behavior has to both the individual and the environment at large. Question 4 Operant conditioning implies using results to modify behavior towards the desired direction. This principle entails altering behavior that is based on the environment through first changing the environment. Drinking alcohol and driving can be changed via operant conditioning. This can be changed through making it illegal to drink and drive as well as closing drinking joints early. Positive reinforcement entails introducing an action that encourages the occurrence of a certain behavior. For instance, withdrawing law pertaining to drinking and driving is a positive reinforcement. On the other hand, negative reinforcement involves introducing behavior that inhibits the commission of a certain behavior; for instance, in the above example, introducing gadgets that will be used to detect drunk drivers on the road. This helps in shaping the behavior of drinking groups within the society. Negative reinforcement also leads to the extinction of undesired behavior. Reinforcing laws against drunk driving is also negative reinforcement. Punishment is one way of discouraging behavior. It is thus an effective way of limiting operant conditioning. Reinforcement cannot be effectively done at once. There is need for a schedule of reinforcement which indicates how the undesired behavior will be altered.

European Advertising vs. American Advertising
Research Paper ARS 230 The main aspect of advertising is to ââ¬Ëget more bang for the buckââ¬â¢, to make it aesthetically pleasing to the eye and gain the viewerââ¬â¢s attention. Throughout the years, advertising has varied in many ways from catchy slogans to iconic logos. Some may say there is nothing wrong with a little healthy competition, but what if one area is gaining the benefits slightly different than the others because of their boldness?American and European advertising are very different culturally as well as aesthetically. There has always been a cultural difference in the style of advertising between America and Europe, whether it is sexual content, trend or originality. A striking boldness seems to be a trending approach in Europe, while classic reason takes a hold of America. Researchers have said that one main difference between American and European advertisements is that European ads use emotional blackmailing while American ads reason for you. Both European and American advertising benefit in marketing, it is simply just a matter of effectiveness based on the audience. When comparing the two cultures of advertisement, American versus European, it is safe to say that no one approach is better, just simply different. It is compared as emotion versus product. America is focused on selling the product and comparing it to other competitors whereas Europe is more focused on the emotion and beauty of the actual advertisement. ââ¬Å" A trend is at work that has gone much further in the United States than in Europe. The trend has been manifested in recent decades by a dramatic growth in the number of separate brands and brand variants, a proliferation that has had a deadening effect on American advertising,â⬠(Jones). America is effective because of the number of brands that are produced and compared where Europe is more effective by staying loyal to their brands and elaborating on commercial advertising. Looking at an advertisement in Eu rope may catch your eye because of the boldness. Europe is well known for using sexual nudity to promote a product, simply because ââ¬Ësex sellsââ¬â¢.Approaching advertising in a different light would be emotionally. In America, advertising can be described as hard selling. Hard selling is a campaign or advertisement that is direct, forceful and straight to the point. For example while watching an American seatbelt warning on Youtube, the commercial is simply based on the motto, ââ¬Å"Click it or Ticketâ⬠, showing average people driving their cars and getting pulled over by officers and receiving a ticket and fine. The commercial is to the point and straight forward, showing almost no emotion. The approach that American marketing companies have used is effective by saying ââ¬ËIf you donââ¬â¢tââ¬â¢ wear your seatbelt, then you will be forced by law to pay a fineââ¬â¢. Similarly compared to the American commercial is the European commercialââ¬â¢s motto, â⬠Å"Heaven Can Waitâ⬠, is an emotional grasp on losing your life over not wearing your seatbelt. Although the two are trying to deliver the same idea, the European method seems to make a gentler or softer appeal to the viewer by incorporating emotion and reality into the grand scheme. The emotion, fear, is incorporated into this commercial and motivates the audience to action. We as viewers can see how both American and European advertising is very successful; it is hard not to view one as more effective. Another aspect of advertising that can differentiate the two cultures is the aesthetics of line and color. For instance, the simple crisp lines of the Nike logo, demonstrates an iconic swoosh and flat one dimensional color paired with the logo ââ¬Å"Just do it,â⬠that subconsciously stays in your mind and makes you feel like you can be an athlete yourself. This portrays a basic and simple, yet straight to the point kind of approach. In Europe you can see a trend of color blo cking and also an artist like logo. ââ¬Å"The American advertisers use more words and headlines, when many European ones use more images and illustrations; they try to find images, which in the best way, without any words, will communicate ideas that stand behind themâ⬠(SYL). This can be described as verbal versus visual. There are many ways to compare the two continents when discussing advertising.Although no one culture is wrong, American advertising seems to feel more effective than European because you simply have more product. American and European advertising are both aesthetically visual and promotionally advertised. Weather the culture or continent, no product or company could be formally published without the beauty of advertisement.Bibliography University. , John Philip Jones; John Philip Jones Is A Professor At The Newhouse School Of Public Communications, Syracuse. ââ¬Å"FORUM; Why European Ads Are More Amusing. â⬠The New York Times. Moreover, in consciousness of majority, communism is whole epoch, in some way style of living. Communism Paper Philosophy Term: Introductory Aspects Modern day Communism is based on the writings of two German economists, Karl Marx and Fredric Engels, who answered the question What is Communism? The distinctions between the rich and poor of society must be eliminated to bring about happiness and prosperity for all. That was the main idea, the communism philosophy term. Communism Paper Philosophy Term: Topics to Consider According to The Communist Manifesto, Communism includes seven main planks or postulates:Prohibition to own property. Developed tax system. Abolit ion of property. One sole Bank. Control labor at the state level. Corporate farming. Education control at the state level.Communism Paper Philosophy Term: Mention Czarism Communism was a new period in its history after Imperial (Czarism) fall, it was a new landmark in everyones life. When the communism took its place, country was divided into two groups of people. Those, who accepted new authorities and those, who were deadly against. Communism philosophy term denied both Religion and the Absolute Morality founded upon Religion. A great number of churches were destroyed. Many priests (popes) were sent to prison together with murderers. Everybody knows that there is nothing eternal under the moon. When you can not resist the inevitable the best way for you is to accept it. So, when time past, communism philosophy term sets deep in peoples mind. Even today, our grandparents remember and compare some things or events in present with the past. Everything had change since that tim e. But, communism philosophy term helped us to won the war, and farmed honor and morality.

Appalachia Music and the Coal Mines essays
Appalachia Music and the Coal Mines essays Appalachia music is not appreciated or respected in todays cultural society like it should be. Many people around the world listen to new forms of the Appalachian music not knowing where or how it was developed. It is the focus of this paper to explain Appalachia music in detail along with a small background on coal mining in the region. The paper also will focuses on singers that wrote protest songs about coal mining, that were featured appeared in the documentary Harlan County, USA. The object for the readers is to gain information about Appalachia music and to appreciate how current music roots were developed. Music holds an extraordinary status in the Appalachia culture. No other folk art is quite as pervasive nor serves such important social function as music. Music is a universal activity of daily life. It is indeed true that you do not meet many people in the mountains who cannot saw a fiddle or twang a banjo. (Rosenberg 46) This homemade music can be best characterized as vernacular tradition-a mixture of religious, dance, popular, and folk music. (Rosenberg 19) The first instrument many people think of when talking about mountain folk music is the banjo. While its usage today is almost entirely by white musicians, the banjo is actually of African origins. The banjo was a favorite instrument of black minstrels that traveled throughout the region. By the middle of the 19th century, whites had become fascinated with the banjo and soon began adopting it themselves. During the 1900s the majority of African-Americans left their banjo tradition behind in favor of inexpensive guitars and the new blues genre. (Conway 285-295) The banjo is a unique instrument to classify because it has combination of elements. The top of the banjo actually is a drumhead that provides a percussive sound each time a string is strummed or plucked. There are five strings on the banjo tuned by intervals rather than exact pitches. T...

Marketing Manager Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
Marketing Manager - Essay Example Hiring a competent manager may be a difficult task, especially if you are not equipped with relevant interview questions. It is important to plan the interview because in a new company, the qualities of a marketing manager are very vital. Estimable behavioral qualities may comprise self-direction, motivation, high energy, financial ambition, and persuasive communication. At a beginning, the entrepreneur usually needs someone who is like moldable clay, not somebody who has the traits of a steel rod. They want somebody who will go an extra mile because small industries operate differently from big companies. A marketing manager is charged with the responsibility of making important decisions on behalf of the company (Einhorn, 2010). In this case, the questions for the job interview for the marketing manager aim at assessing their interpersonal communication skills, their analytical skills, marketing approach, and background. Any marketing practitioner is supposed to find out and identify what is trending in the market, the demand of products, their competitors, and prospective customers. They also need to define the product design and observe the development of the product. After developing the productââ¬â¢s pricing strategies, they also need to launch the new product. Finally, marketers need to use various marketing tools to sell the product (Smitt & Albaum, 2004). Open-ended questions are preferred in interviewing a marketing manager. As you ask these open-ended questions, listen not only to the content of a candidates response, but also to the voice and manner behind it. The questions to be asked should be narrowed down to professional experience of the interviewee. Sample questions are; These questions enable the candidate to know why the plan they designed failed and what they can learn from the failure. They are meant to scrutinize the
